Royal Crown Stables, LLC, located in Kimberton, Pennsylvania is a state of the art multi-discipline training facility, with a focus on raising and training thoroughbred races horses.
The farm offers all of the advantages of a classic European-style training facility, with two long, uphill turf gallops, and a beautiful training track, with state-of-the-art footing. There are many paddocks, large and small, at Royal Crown Stables. Horses go outside and roll and buck and eat grass every day, which keeps them fresh, happy, and keeps their appetites up. King said his training consists of a lot of hill work, which gives horses a strong cardiovascular workout with less pounding on their legs.
On the back 30 acres of the farm is a meadow by the pond with very soft footing even in the middle of summer, which is great for figure-eight galloping and teaching the horses lead switches.
“It also has what I call the ‘mountain,’” said King. “It’s a three-furlong steep hill for trotting and easy galloping or blowouts. This hill really builds muscle on the horses. We also have a one-mile turf gallop. This gallop runs along the stream and has luscious thick grass and finishes with a gradual three-furlong hill, which is great for a two-minute lick or workouts.”
King said horses are loaded and taken to the track for recorded workouts and to get them through the starting gate. Because they load on a van so often, horses become very good shippers, which then helps them on race day.
“We also gallop on our new track,” said King. “After years of planning, Toby Carlson of the Ketcham Group built us a training track which offers full drainage, a stabilized sub-base, and a high-quality, state-of-the-art sand cushion.”
King compares Royal Crown Stables to farms in England and Ireland, with its bucolic landscape, rolling hills and equine-centric atmosphere.
“With my horses right up the hill from our house, I can check them myself every night to see if they have finished their dinner and check their legs and see how bright they are,” he said. “I could not do this any other way. I am, and have always been, a hands and eyes-on trainer. I am living out an absolute dream at the new farm, and I believe the sky is the limit for our race horses.”
